Ovulation Problems

Normally each month an oocyte develops in the ovaries of a woman, matures and an ovulation takes place between the 12th-14th days of menstruation on the average (egg laying-cracking). In some women this does not happen and this case is called "Anovulation" and usually leads to irregular menstruations. In these women, the period between menstruations extends (oligomenorrhae), sometimes they can not have menstruation more than 6 months (amenorrhae). And when they have, abundant and long bleedings are seen. Oligomenorrhae is seen in the form of Policystic Ovary Syndrome; increases in hair production on the body, infertility, weight gain are observed. When examined with ultrasound, there are many small cysts in the ovaries of these women.

The oocyte in the developing folicule and releasing of the oocyte
with the cracking of the folicule can be seen.

Which examinations are conducted for ovulation problems?

Knowing the details of the previous menstruation regularity can generally give us an idea whether there is an ovulation defect or not. Hormone analysis and examination of the ovaries with ultrasound on certain days of the menstruation is informative. In some cases, uterus biopsy is conducted and the endometrium tissue is examined.

Hormonal examinations, conducted on the 3rd day of menstruation, provide information whether there is a hormonal disorder or not. The ratio between FSH and LH hormones turning in favour of LH, releasing of PRL (prolactine) hormone in excess (hyperprolactinemy), tiroid hormones being released less (hypothiroidism) or more (hyperthiroidism), disorder in the releasing of adrenal gland hormones influence ovulation mechanisms negatively.

Whether a woman ovulates or not can be followed by ultrasound, it can also be understood with the measurement of body heat and the level of progesterone hormone measured on the 21st day of menstruation.
