If the reason of infertility can not be found after standard tests, then it is called "Undefined" infertility. In approximately 10-20% of infertile couples, no reason leading to infertility can be determined. It is generally frequent when the woman is over 30. Though it is termed as undefined infertility, it is generally considered that the problems with the quality of the oocyte and/or fertilization disorders are effective. These can not be understood with standard tests.


Can standby without treatment be done in undefined infertility?

Couples having undefined infertility can sometimes have a baby without receiving a treatment after some time.Their chance to conceive via natural ways diminish with increasing period of infertility.There is no significant difference between their chance to conceive with or without treatment within two years. A couple’s chance to naturally conceive, who has been infertile for more than three years, decreases by 1-2% on the average each month. (10-25 % for each year). In these groups of patients, the age of the woman is quiet important and their chance to conceive without treatment over the age of 30 decreases by 10% for each year.


Treatment in undefined infertility

With the induction of ovulation and/or intrauterine insemination, the chance to conceive is increased.

The chance to conceive increases two fold in patients receiving a 4-6 months of clomiphene citrate treatment compared to the ones not receiving any treatment. Similarly, there is a chance of 15-22% on the average with the insemination protocoles applied with intramuscular or subcutaneous administered drugs called gonadotropine (FSH, LH).

Similar pregnancy rates can be achieved by recommending timed intercourse without insemination with induction with gonadotropins or clomiphene citrate. Since ovulation occurs 40 hours after HCG injection is administered on the average, the couples are advised on the timing of the intercourse.
