What is Infertility?
Not being ablr to conceive for 12 months during regular sexual intercourse without using a contraception method is called infertility. Today, every one out of seven couples are experiencing this problem.

Definitions

Primary infertility : Not experiencing a pregnancy before.

Secondary infertility : Experiencing a pregnancy before, however experiencing an infertility problem later on.

Sterility : Congenital absence of uterus in a woman or having no chance of conceivig due to some chromosomal diseases.

When should couples apply to a doctor?

If a pregnancy can not develop within a year despite regular sexual intercourse, then couples are advised to apply to a doctor. In the case of infertility, since age is an essential factor affecting success, in a 25 year old woman this period can be longer, but a woman over 35 should apply to a doctor as soon as possible. Especially women who had undergone a gynecological operation before or having a well known disease or problem detected in herself or her husband can keep this period shorter (for example 6 months).

What are the problems in couples who can not conceive?

  1. Ovulation problems
  2. Problems related to the tubes
  3. Sperm related problems in men
  4. Problems due to the declining age of a woman
  5. Uterus disorders
  6. Not detecting any problem despite examinations (undefined infertility)
  7. Endometriosis

These can be considered as the reasons that are rare to be seen: Couples having their tubes ligated willingly (can be valid both for man and woman), cancer treatment (chemotherapy, radiotherapy), genetic diseases etc.
