In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In vitro fertilization is the process of artificial fertilization of an egg by a sperm outside the body. IVF is an important treatment method used when other assisted reproductive methods have failed in the treatment of infertility.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

What is in vitro fertilization (IVF)?

It is an infertility treatment method that increases the chance of pregnancy in couples who have little or no chance of conceiving naturally. By using this method, egg collection is performed after the female egg cells (oocyte) are developed with hormone drugs. The collected eggs are fertilized in the embryology laboratory with sperm taken from the male. Pregnancy is ensured by choosing the healthiest embryo among the embryos obtained as a result of this process and placing them in the uterus of the woman.

In Vitro Fertilization Treatment Risks

The probability of multiple pregnancy may increase because the drugs used in the vaccination treatment may cause the development of more than one follicle in the ovaries. In addition, although rare, the drugs used in the treatment may cause hypersensitivity or unresponsiveness to the drugs in some people, such situations delay the treatment to the next menstrual period.

In Vitro Fertilization Procedure

Ovarian Stimulation and Enhancement

Ovarian stimulation, which is considered to be one of the first procedures performed in assisted reproductive treatments, is the process of helping to form healthy and fertile egg cells by supplementing with various drugs in order to increase the chance of pregnancy.

The ovaries are stimulated by drugs, thereby healthier follicles are obtained during the ovulation period. After the treatment starts, a control examination is made at regular intervals, and the number and size of the developing follicles are controlled by vaginal ultrasonography. Depending on the condition of the ovaries observed in the ultrasound, a blood estrogen analysis may be required. The time required for the stimulation of eggs varies from person to person, but the average is about 10 to 11 days.

Egg Collection

Eggs that reach a certain maturity and quality during the stimulation process are ready for the collection 34-35 hours after the application of cracking needle. At this stage, timing is very important for the expected success: The needle should be applied correctly at the specified time.

Preparation of Sperm

In the IVF method, sperm preparation consists of the best selection and concentration of sperm.

Fertilization of the Egg

The egg cells we obtain are fertilized with sperm in the embryology laboratory. At this stage, depending on the egg and sperm quality fertilization is achieved by using the normal in vitro fertilization method or microinjection method. Fertilization is expected to occur within 12 to 16 hours; fertilization is detected with the aid of a microscope. After the fertilization result is notified to the couple, the time for embryo transfer is decided.

Pregnancy Test

A pregnancy test is performed 12 days after the transfer procedure. Whether pregnancy has occurred or not is learned. This test is a blood test called BHCG in the blood that does not require fasting and satiety. The expected mother with a positive pregnancy test result is invited for ultrasound as the next step.

Frequently Asked Questions About IVF Treatment

What to do if the sperm count is very low or no sperm is found in the sperm test?

Microinjection is performed if the sperm quality is low. In cases where there is no sperm in the semen, it is necessary to surgically search for sperm in the testis. In addition, the ROSI technique is another method used in men with sperm problems.

How many times can IVF treatment be tried?

There is no limit on the number of attempts. Especially in infertility problems of unknown origin, there are many cases that achieved successful pregnancy in the 8th-10th attempts.
